“A Word Apart”, the main feature of this monument is a large globe, split in half representing the conflict in Europe and in the Pacific, A Word Apart. There is a walk between the two half. The names of those that severed are listed on the inside of the two halves; there is also a Purple Heart and a World War II Victory Medal. As you enter the center section there is a plaque on the sidewalk with the following inscribed:
United States of America
1941 – 1945
Freedom from
Fear and Want
Freedom of
Speech and Religion
Off to the side of each entrance an engraved stone that reads:
Honoring all veterans of Chatham County
who gave their lives to retain
the freedom of the United States of America
and save the world from tyranny.
The memorial is lit at night and surrounded by a seating area where you can look at the features of the globe. On the back of the seating area there are medallions for the Army, Marines, Navy, Merchant Marine, Coast Guard, and the Army Air Corps.
