The Douglas C-47 Skytrain or Dakota is a military transport aircraft that was developed from the Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used extensively by the Allies during WW II and remained in front line operations through the 1950s with a few remaining in operation to this day. After WW II, many C-47s remained in USAF service, participating in the Berlin Airlift and other peacetime activities. During the Korean War, C-47s hauled supplies, dropped paratroops, evacuated wounded and dropped flares for night bombing attacks. In Vietnam, the C-47 served again as a transport, but it was also used in a variety of other ways which included flying ground attack (gunship), reconnaissance, and psychological warfare missions. The C47's first flight was on 23 December 1941; production began in January 1942 with the first unit delivered on 1 February 1942. When production ceased in 1945, 10,174 had been built. This aircraft, C-47A-20-DK s/n 42-92990, was constructed by Douglas at their Oklahoma City, OK, plant and delivered in 1944. It participated in the Normandy invasion during WWII. At some point it was turned over to the Cambodian Air Force, but showed up on 30 March 1965 registered to the Hillsborough County Health Unit, Tampa, FL, with r/n N16602 as a mosquito control sprayer. On 3 January 1966 a Certificate of airworthiness for NR16602 was issued. In 1996, it was owned by American Warbird Corp with the moniker "Okie Dokie". She was gifted to the Jimmy Doolittle Air and Space Museum Foundation by Duncan Miller, a Gordon Valley resident and former US Army Air Corps pilot and flight instructor on 24 April 2006 still with the civil r/n of N16602. On 27 September 2011, the civil registration, N16602, was cancelled.
