This Shell Monument indicates the position of the headquarters of the Lieutenant General
James Longstreet on the afternoon of Sunday, September 20, 1863, during the during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863.

"James Longstreet (January 8, 1821 – January 2, 1904) was one of the foremost Confederate generals of the American Civil War and the principal subordinate to General Robert E. Lee, who called him his "Old War Horse." He served under Lee as a corps commander for many of the famous battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater, but also with Gen. Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater. Biographer and historian Jeffry D. Wert wrote that 'Longstreet ... was the finest corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia; in fact, he was arguably the best corps commander in the conflict on either side.' "

Monument marks the site of General James Longstreet's Headquarters commanding the Left Wing of the Condererate Army on the afternoon of September 20, 1863.

Short Physical Description
6'2" square at base and 5' high, the monument consists of a pyramid of cannonballs set in cement & painted black, resting on a molded limestone base. Attached to base is a painted metal plaque identifying the headquarters site.
Long Physical Description
The pyramid's square base is 7 shells wide and 7 shells deep. It is 7 layers tall.
The monument is located within the Chickamauga Battlefield along Dyer Road in North Dyer Field, map site #180.

Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system).
