"Göreme ist ein Ort in Kappadokien in der Provinz Nevsehir in der Türkei. Der Ort hieß in byzantinischer Zeit Matiana, dann Avcilar, bis er in den 1980er Jahren aus touristischen Gründen in Göreme, die türkisierte Form des ursprünglichen Namens Korama umbenannt wurde.
Der Ort ist Zentrum des Nationalparks Göreme, der zusammen mit anderen Felsendenkmalen von Kappadokien seit 1985 zum Weltkultur- und Naturerbe gehört. Geprägt wird die Landschaft um Göreme durch markante Tuffsteinformationen, die teilweise ausgehöhlt sind, die so genannten Feenkamine (engl. fairy chimney, türk. peri bacalari), für die diese Region vor allem touristisch bekannt ist.
Tuffgestein unterschiedlicher Härte bildet die Basis für diese Landschaft: Vulkanausbrüche und Wasserläufe formten im Laufe mehrerer Millionen Jahre die typischen Gebilde heraus, die man heute kennt.
Die ersten Christen nutzten sie, um in Abgeschiedenheit ein andächtiges Leben führen zu können, aber vor allem als Versteck vor ihren Feinden (Perser, Römer, Araber, Mongolen...). Sie legten nicht nur Kirchen und Kapellen an, die ins Gestein gearbeitet wurden, sondern ganze Wohnanlagen für mehrere tausend Menschen: Zum Teil bis zu zehn Stockwerke tief, ermöglichten sie mit Einrichtungen wie Küchen, Lager, Schlafräume und sogar Tierställe und Leichenhallen samt Lüftungsschächten einigermaßen komfortable Lebensumstände.
Ein weiterer Vorteil bot das Wohnen in Tuffgestein bezüglich der Witterung: Im Sommer hält es kühl, im Winter kühlt es nicht so stark aus. Die Gänge konnten gegebenenfalls mit großen mühlsteinartigen Steinen versperrt werden. Man vermutet bis zu 100 Anlagen, die auch miteinander verbunden sein sollen. Derinkuyu ist die größte der touristisch erschlossenen Anlagen und beherbergte wohl um die 10.000 Menschen.

"Göreme in Cappadocia is a place in the province of Nevsehir in Turkey. The place was called in the Byzantine period Matiana, then Avcilar until it was renamed in the 1980s for reasons of tourism in Goreme, the shape of the original name Turkicised Korama.
The town is the center of Goreme National Park, together with other rock monuments of Cappadocia since 1985 belongs to the world cultural and natural heritage. They created not only churches and chapels, which were worked into the rock, but all residential facilities for several thousand people: Partly to a depth of ten stories, it made possible with facilities such as kitchens, warehouses, dormitories, and even stables and mortuaries, including ventilation shafts fairly comfortable circumstances.
Another advantage offered living in tuff about the weather: it keeps you cool in summer and in winter it cools down is not as strong. The course could possibly be blocked with a large millstone-like stones. It is believed up to 100 turbines, which are to be connected with each other. Derinkuyu is the biggest of the touristy facilities and housed probably around 10,000 people.
