Emery is located just west of the Spanish Trail trade route between Santa Fe, new Mexico and the Spanish settlements of California. The trail made a wide swing to the north to bypass the forbidding terrain of the San Rafael Swell. As it returned to a southwesterly heading it passed through the area now known as Castle Valley with Emery being at its southern end.
