Mount Katahdin (USGS name) is the highest mountain in Maine at 5,268 feet (1,606 m). Named Katahdin by the Penobscot Indians, the term means "The Greatest Mountain". Katahdin is the centerpiece of Baxter State Park: a steep, tall mountain formed from underground magma. The flora and fauna on the mountain are typical of those found in northern New England.

Katahdin is one of the most spectacular scenic hike that I did with my husband, Geochum, when we climbed the 115-4000fters in 2010-2011.
We started by visiting the Blueberry Knoll where you can have a great view on the mountain.
Then we climbed above the tree line to Hamlin Peak. The view is famous as you can see 360 degrees around.
After this peak, we headed to Baxter Peak, and then South Peak. Here you are on top on the Maine! If you choose a nice day, you can see all over the places, lakes and mountains around.
Then we took the famous Knife Edge Trail, well known in the area. For about 3/10 of a mile the trail is 3 feet wide, with a drop off on either side.
This Knife Edge traverses the ridge between Pamola Peak. From Pamola Peak, you follow the trail to the parking lot.
A fabulous hiking day that I recommand for experienced hikers. It took us 9h30 for a total distance of 10.6 miles.
