Recently built the new beach here is a real hit as city dwellers from Guadalajara descend upon the town of Chapala each weekend.

The area that is now a beach was formerly a marshy mess of muck and water hyacinth in the 2008. Thanks to the efforts of the city of Chapala the lake side area has been cleaned up and tons of sand brought in to make the beach that is here today. Swimming is of course allowed and encouraged. The beach is very nice although it has a 2 star rating. This is because the sand is course and has a lot of stones along the shore. Although some are large they are all smooth and pose no threat of cutting your feet.
As a interesting side note, the satellite image you see shows the water hyacinth as it was in 2/3/2008 and all of it was removed BY HAND. Workers got into the water and pull all of it out handful by handful to waiting dump trucks that hauled it away.
