North American Aviation Corp developed the Sabreliner as a private venture to meet a USAF requirement for a twin jet utility trainer. The prototype T-39 made its first flight on 16 September 1958, followed by the first flight of the T-39A on 30 June 1960. The USAF and USN purchased a total of 211 units. They used it as a utility transport, small cargo flights and for pilot proficiency training. After military production commitments were met, North American offered it on the commercial market as the Sabreliner. There it became the first successful business jet. The USAF changed the designation to CT-39A in June 1977. It carried a crew of two with room for four passengers.
USAF s/n 61-0660 is a T-39A-1-NA, one of 143 T-39As built for the USAF by North American Aviation in Inglewood, CA. It was delivered to the USAF in June 1962 and assigned to the 3902nd Air Base Wing (SAC), Offutt AFB, NE. In April 1963 it was sent to the 22nd Bomb Wing (SAC), March AFB, CA. In January 1974 it went to the 6th Bomb Wing, Minot AFB, ND, then returned to the 22nd Bomb Wing in February 1974. From June 1975 it was assigned to either the 1400th Military Airlift Squadron (MAC), McClellan AFB, CA, or the 63rd Military Airlift Wing (MAC), Norton AFB, CA. It was retired to the museum in August 1985.
