The tunnel was completed in 1890 and operated for over 100 years however the bore diameter of 19’ 10” could not handle larger freight cars and a new tunnel, 27’ 6” in diameter was opened in 1994.

The top picture is of the Canadian portal taken around 1890. The bottom picture was taken from approximately the same angle in 2006. Note the new tunnel to the right of the old. Also Imperial Oil’s Sarnia Refinery is now on top of the tunnel – Imperial moved there in 1898 after the tunnel was built.
