Vishnu—Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. - Statues of Religious Figures on Waymarking.com

This statue is found just inside the border of the Cambodian province of Siem Reap, on the way to the city of the same name, from the Thai border, in the small town of Kralanh. The statue appears to be of sandstone, and depicts the god Vishnu, arrayed for battle, with a Garuda as his conveyance into then battle.

The statue is on the major traffic intersection of the town, thus entry is free. As this is an important highway, traffic is a problem. Move quickly.

This statue is an interpretation of a bas-relief found in the outer gallery of Angkor Wat. It seems that more and more towns and villages in Cambodia are adopting imagery from Angkor as public art.


Vishnu is the supreme and omniscient god of the Hindu religion. Vishnu is portrayed in many different guises. Prior to the advent of Buddhism, the Hindu religion was dominant in south east Asia, it still plays a major roll in public faith and religious iconography. Thus it is not unusual to find Vishnu and other Hindu gods honoured in this fashion.
