Jackson Lake was originally a natural lake behind a glacial moraine. In 1907, a temporary rock filled crib dam was completed, raising the lake level by about 22 feet. That dam failed in 1910. In 1911, a concrete gravity dam with earth embankments winds was completed. In 1916, additional construction raised the dam to a height of 65.5 feet. In 1989, safety work was completed to protect the dam from failure in an earthquake.
The total length of the dam is 4920 feet with a 24 foot wide crest. The lake stores 847,000 acre-feet of water.
