Built in 1909 as the Stanhope Hall, this
theatre in the seaside town of Deal has remained so into the present day. In
1923 Major J.J. Astor purchased the building and in late 1945 extended the
building. Having done so he graciously gifted the theatre to the Town of
Deal. In recognition of this gift, Deal Town Council renamed it the Astor
Theatre. It has recently seen a new management team come to it's aid, and is
again a thriving Community Theatre, used for theatrical events, live music gigs,
concerts, amateur dramatics, folks nights, music and art festival and a diverse
programme of classical films.
