The plaque says, "The Transpacific Yacht Race, 2,225 nautical miles to Honolulu, is one of the great ocean races of the world. First launched in 1906, the race now features as many as 80 yachts, all competing for a place on the Transpac Walk of Fame. Past winner include celebrities as Frank Morgan, the "Wizard of Oz," in 1947, and Roy E. Disney in 1999. Over the years, other crew members have included Ted Kennedy, Olympic swimming star, Mark Spitz, and Johnny (Tarzan) Weismuller. But, for the most part, it has been men, women, and children as young as 11 sailing with their families sharing a love of the sea.
Fore the race's Centennial Celebration in 2005, the City of Long Beach has dedicated Rainbow Harbor as the "Transpac Village" mainland staging base. Here competitors from across the country and overseas can interact with the public and perform last-minute preparations on their boats before starting the race off the Palos Verdes Peninsula each July during odd numbered years."
