A USAF decision to procure the Vought A-7 aircraft was the second instance in a decade to buy Navy aircraft. The aircraft was modified to meet Air Force requirements by replacing the original Pratt & Whitney TF-30 engine with the Allison TF-41-A-1 turbofan, increasing power by 2,000 lbf. Other changes included installation of a 20mm multi-barrel cannon, advanced navigation/attack systems, heads-up display and laser range finder.
USAF s/n 75-0393 is an A-7D-17-CV, one of 450 built by Ling-Temco-Vought in Dallas, TX. The aircraft was delivered to the 162nd Tactical Fighter Group (ANG), Tucson International Airport, AZ, in July 1976. It remained with this unit until flown to the museum on 3 November 1989.
