The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17PF was delivered as an all-weather interceptor version of the MiG-17. The design of the MiG-17 ensured improved high speed performance characteristics as a carry-over from its predecessor, the MiG-15. The prototype first flew on 13 January 1950. It was the first Soviet fighter to have an afterburning engine, the Klimov VK-1F, derived from the British Rolls-Royce Nene. The large wing with the large wing fences allowed the MiG-17 to out turn most adversaries, but the aircraft was limited in its rolling capabilities because it did not have hydraulic boosted control surfaces, as do fighters used by the United States.

The MiG-17PF featured the Izumrud radar and three Mudelmann-Rikhter 23mm cannons. Over 9,000 of all versions of the MiG-17 were built in the Soviet Union, Poland and China. A total of 104 MiG-17s were shot down by American fighters during the Vietnam War.

This MiG-17PF arrived by truck from Ellsworth AFB, SD, on 12 October 1993. How, when and where the USAF obtained it remains classified.
