Het verhaal van de Boeienweide begint in 1960 wanneer het opleidingsschip ‘Mercator' uit de vaart wordt genomen. In 1961 huldigt prins Albert het schip in als museum op Linkeroever. Een jaar later wordt ook de weide rond het schip als ‘maritiem openluchtmuseum' in gebruik genomen. Boeien, ankers, tonnen, schroeven, een kanon enz. vertellen over ‘het leven langs en op de Schelde'.
De Mercator rust sinds 1964 in Oostende en een aantal voorwerpen is verhuisd. In de toekomst zal het ‘maritiem openluchtmuseum Boeienweide' deel uitmaken van het Museum aan de Stroom, het nieuwe museum over de stad, zijn inwoners en de haven. De ‘weide' wordt volledig herdacht en heringericht.

The story of the" Boeienheid"(buoys Meadow ) begins in 1960 when the training ship "Mercator" is taken out of service. In 1961 Prince Albert inaugurates the ship as a museum on the Left bank of the Schelde river. A year later the park around the ship became a "maritime air museum '. Buoys, anchors, barrels, screws, a gun etc. tell about 'life on and along the Scheldt.
The Mercator rest since 1964 in Ostend and a number of objects moved. In the future, the 'open-air marine "boeienheide" is a part of the Museum on the River, the new museum in the city, its residents and the harbor. The "meadow" is completely rethought and redesigned.
