The Raygun Gothic Rocketship is the third and latest in a series of public art exhibitions near Pier 14. It is sponsored by the Black Rock Arts Foundation and was unveiled on Aug 8, 2010 by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

From the Rocketship website:

The Raygun Gothic Rocketship is a rococo retro-futurist future-rustic vernacular between yesterday’s tomorrow and the future that never was, a critical kitsch somewhere between The Moons of Mongo & Manga Nouveau.

The art piece is a 40-foot-tall sculpture created by a team of Bay Area artists led by artists Sean Orlando, Nathaniel Taylor, and David Shulman, along with Five Ton Crane (5TC), an Oakland based artist collective.

The sculpture is accompanied by a companion piece, the Rocket Stop designed by Alan Rorie, which tells the story of the Rocketship’s exploits, providing route, schedule and other information. The installation will be illuminated for nighttime viewing.
