As you travel eastbound on U.S. Route 6 from Killingly, CT into Foster, RI a welcome sign appears just east of the border on the south side of the road.

The smallest state in area also has the longest name. Officially is is called the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The state borders the Atlantic Ocean on the south - Block Island Sound to the west and Rhode Island Sound to the southeast. Narragansett Bay extends north from Rhode Island Sound and divides the eastern part of the state. The state has a total area of 1,214 square miles (3,140 square km), of which, 1,045 square miles (2706 square km) is land. Therefore about 14% of Rhode Island's area is ocean water. This geography gives rise to the state's official nickname - "The Ocean State".
