The water tower is also a benchmark -
RM0691
1952/01/01 by CGS (FIRST OBSERVED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1952 (LFW) THE TANK IS LOCATED IN THE WESTERN EXTREMITIES OF THE VILLAGE OF BUTTERNUT, ONE BLOCK WEST OF STATE HIGHWAY 13, ON THE NORTH SIDE OF PARK ROAD AND IN THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE VILLAGE PARK. THE TANK IS A MUSHROOM TYPE STEEL STRUCTURE ABOUT 90 FEET HIGH AND SUPPORTED BY 4 LEGS. IT IS PAINTED SILVER WITH THE NAME BUTTERNUT, IN BLACK, ON THE SOUTH SIDE. IT IS OWNED BY THE VILLAGE WATER DEPARTMENT.
According to a log on the benchmark, the
new tower was 'almost completed' in mid Sept 2010 and this one might be torn down. Judging from the paint, they are not concerned with maintaining it. The new tower is about 300 feet northeast.
