This marker dedicated to the 26th Tennessee Infantry is on a wooded path, on the west side of Layfette Rd, near Poe Rd. in the Chickamauga National Battlefield. It indicates the position of the 26th at 11:30 a.m. on September 20, 1963.

This marker made of smooth-faced Tennessee gray marble is dedicated to 26th Tennessee Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The battalion was organized on September 6, 1861. This is the only marker to 26th Tennessee Infantry Regiment on the battlefield. It marks their location at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 20, 1863.

Short Significance Description:

Monument contributes to nat'l significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description

1'6" wide x 1' deep x 3' high, the marker is a rectangular block of smooth-faced Tennessee gray marble inscribed on the front. Marks the unit's position on September 20, 1863, at 11:30 p.m.
