General Robert E. Lee of Virginia was born on January 19, 1807 and he died on October 12, 1870. During the Civil War he commanded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. On January 31, 1865, Lee was promoted to general-in-chief of Confederate forces.

Gen Lee sits erect; his left hand is down by his side and slightly to the rear. He holds the rains and a sheet of paper in his right hand. His sword hangs from his left side and he wears a pistol on his right side. He wears his uniform and a cape.
