Zu Füßen der Burganlage Veste Niederhaus fließt zunächst die Ilz von links und kurz danach von rechts der Inn der Donau zu. Das Wasser des Inns, das von den Alpen kommt, ist grün, das der Donau blau und das der aus einem Moorgebiet kommenden Ilz schwarz, so dass die Donau ein längeres Stück nach dem Zusammenfluss drei Wasserfarben (Grün, Blau, Schwarz) aufweist. Auffallend ist dabei, wie stark das grüne Wasser des Inns das Wasser der Donau beiseite drängt. Dies hängt neben der zeitweise sehr großen Wassermenge des Inns hauptsächlich mit der stark unterschiedlichen Tiefe der beiden Gewässer (Inn: 1,90 Meter / Donau: 6,80 Meter) zusammen – „der Inn überströmt die Donau“. Zwar führt der Inn im Jahresmittel auch etwa fünf Prozent mehr Wasser als die Donau selbst, doch rührt dies hauptsächlich von den starken Hochwässern des Inns bei der Schneeschmelze her, während die Donau eine deutlich konstantere Wasserführung aufweist. Sie führt die meiste Zeit des Jahres (sieben Monate, Oktober bis April) mehr Wasser mit sich als der Inn.
Donaufahrt zur Mündung des Inn
Auch wenn der optische Eindruck es also nahelegt, von der Mündung der Donau in den Inn zu sprechen, ist die Namensgebung Donau für den sich ergebenden Strom weiterhin gerechtfertigt – nicht nur durch die Länge der zurückgelegten Wegstrecken (Donau: 647 km / Inn: 510 km)
