Psychologist Dr John Holden comes to London to participate in a symposium on paranormal psychology. Whilst there he intends to expose a devil cult leader, Julian Karswell. The symposium is being chaired by Holden’s collaborator Professor Henry Harrington. Before the symposium is held Professor Harrington is electrocuted in a bizarre motoring accident.

Professor Harrington’s niece, Joanna, believes that her uncle had a runic curse applied to him by Dr Karswell. In order to investigate further Holden needs to consult reference books, books which Karswell has the only copies. Holden accepts an invitation to visit Karswell. During the visit Karswell secretly places a paper with a curse on it in Holden’s papers. Holden starts to have strange happenings occur to him and he realises that he must give the paper back to Karswell. In the climax to the film Holden manages to slip the paper back to Karswell on a train. The curse then rebounds on Karswell.

In the film Karswell’s house is played by Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire. The two clips show Holden and Joanna approaching the house via the bridge over the lake, and a shot of the car outside the house. Today BrocketHall is a private country club and out of bounds to the public. However, the bridge is on a public footpath allowing the bridge clip to be photographed. The hall can also be photographed long distance, although the angle of the shot differs slightly from that of the film.
