Ramsgate Lifeboat Station is one of the oldest in the United
Kingdom, with the first lifeboat, built by Henry Greathead, being placed on
station by The Trustees of Ramsgate Harbour in 1802. Although the lifeboat cover
here fell by the wayside around 1824, it was reintroduced in 1851. In 1865 the
RNLI took over joint control with The Board of Trade until full control was
handed to the RNLI in 1922.
The Ramsgate Lifeboat "Prudential" and her crew were at Dunkirk in 1940,
and whilst under almost constant enemy fire, rescued some 2,800 soldiers from the beach . The Coxswain, Howard Knight, received the Distinguished Service Medal for
his actions.
In 1969, the first Ramsgate Inshore Lifeboat was placed on station, and a new
station was built in 1998. The station has an Atlantic 75 B-Class
"Bob Turnbull" (B-765) and the all weather Trent Class "Esme
Anderson" (14-02).
