This is the only remnant left of the former Assumption Convent & School. It was built by Edward Welby Pugin in 1864-65 as the grand entrance to the convent of the Sisters of the Assumption. The sisters then ran a school from 1878 until it closed in the mid 1970's when the convent was sold and demolished for new housing.
The archway was given Grade II listed status in 1988.
