Notre histoire phénoménale a débuté par la vente à 10 cents d’un produit encore sans nom, le 4 août 1938, à Kankakee, Illinois. Un père et son fils, dans une usine de Green River, Illinois, faisaient depuis un certain temps des expériences en vue de développer un produit laitier glacé à consistance plus molle. Ils sont entrés en contact avec Sherb Noble, un bon ami et client, qui a accepté d’organiser une activité du type « Tout ce que vous pouvez manger » dans son comptoir laitier. En deux heures, ils ont servi plus de 1600 portions du nouveau dessert.
À l’époque, le franchisage alimentaire n’était pas connu, mais le potentiel du nouveau produit en faisait un naturel pour ce type de système. Au moment où les États-Unis entraient dans la seconde guerre mondiale en décembre 1941, il n’y avait pas encore 10 restaurants Dairy Queen. Toutefois, peu de temps après la guerre, le système a pris son envol à un rythme jamais vu et encore inégalé depuis. De seulement 100 restaurants en 1947, le nombre est passé à 1446 en 1950 puis à 2 600 en 1955. De nos jours, le système Dairy Queen est l’un des plus importants systèmes de restauration rapide au monde avec plus de 5 900 restaurants aux États-Unis, au Canada et dans 20 pays étrangers.

In two hours, they served more than 1,600 servings of the new dessert.
Back then, food franchising was not known, but the potential of the new product was a natural for this type of system. When the U.S. entered World War II in December 1941, there was not yet 10 Dairy Queen restaurants. However, shortly after the war, the system has taken off at a pace not seen and yet unseen since. Only 100 restaurants in 1947, the number rose to 1,446 in 1950 and then 2600 in 1955. Today, the Dairy Queen system is one of the largest fast food systems in the world with over 5,900 restaurants in the U.S., Canada and in 20 foreign countries.
