Here on the River Stour at Sandwich the river is tidal all the way to the tidal
limit at Fordwich near Canterbury. Sandwich was once a thriving and
important port on this stretch of English coast line. Today the River Stour at
Sandwich is much more sedate and used mainly by varying size pleasure craft.
One recent re-enactment of the past importance of the River Stour was held in
April 2011 when 750kg of Caen Stone, required by masons restoring Canterbury
Cathedral, was taken on the
original
11th century route to Fordwich up the River Stour. The stone was carried
on a
100 year old Dutch barge skippered and owned by the Sandwich Harbour Master,
Captain Colin Carr.
The
nearby boatyard has a large crane to hoist larger pleasure craft into and out of
the water, but smaller craft use the Sandwich Quay slipway where this large
8 knot speed restriction
Warning Sign is located and enforced by
Sandwich Port and Haven Authority.
