The Empire Cinema in Delf Street, Sandwich, first opened it's doors to the
public on 26th June 1937. The movies chosen for the opening feature were
Trust The Navy and
Craig's Wife.
The Empire was described at the time as, "... a modern, up to date and luxurious
building situated in a prominent position near to the Guildhall in the centre of
the town." The auditorium was capable of seating 600 people in the circle and
stalls. It closed it's doors in the 1970's, but in 1993 it was reopened, now
operating a smaller cinema in the former circle section of the original
building, and can accommodate 130 people. The art deco architecture with
original decorative neon lighting has been retained, and more modern,
comfortable seating installed.
The lounge section is now sited in the original stalls area, it to having been
completely refurbished with comfortable furniture and a maple wood dancing floor
installed in front of the cinema stage.
