In the far north of the far northern Thai province of Chiang Rai exists one point where three nations and two rivers meet: Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, with the Mekong and Ruak Rivers. This geographical conjunction has created two fields of endeavour in this region over the past few decades—illegal opium and legal tourism.
Now, as bus loads of Thai mothers on holiday exit their vehicles and begin taking snaps, and as sun burnt backpackers wander out and consult their Lonely Planet guides to life, hawkers of ferry services will come forward and offer you magnificent opportunities to see life on the Mekong River. This will involve paying way too much for a ten minute journey out onto the River where you will be able to obtain a closer look of the River, and even cross over into Laos.
There are maybe a dozen different, small ferry companies here, each with two or three small 'Dragon boats'—life jackets mandatory. A trip alone will set you back 100 ($3) baht (or 200, or 300, if your negotiation skills need experience). Great fun.
