The district capital of Chiang Saen is only ten kilometres or so south of the famous tourist spot of the 'Golden Triangle'. This triangle is the junction of the three nations of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. Once associated with drug lords and gangsters, now tourists and backpackers (an improvement, right?).

From Chiang Saen one can obtain a ride on a small ferry boat, either with a group of others or individually. The destination is your choice, these ferries are for tourists, not working locals. You can sail up the Mekong to the Triangle, or simply spend a few minutes cruising around the River, or even across over into Laos (keep in mind your visa, though it has been suggested that if you disembark at the casino, the local authorities will graciously allow you entry, without tiresome paperwork—though I know that the honest and hard working police of the great state of Laos would never commit such a heinous act).

You will ride in a 'long tail boat'. A long, slender vehicle. If you are prone to motion sickness I suggest medication before you embark. The Mekong has some powerful swirls and there are other larger boats cruising along the River. Bumbs occur. Also, life jackets are mandatory. All that paperwork for a tourist overboard! I suspect that these trips are available only during daylight hours, any month of the year, when the Mekong is not being too cantankerous.

Price, the price is for the asking. I would suggest 100 baht for an individual ride around the town area, maybe 200 baht for a journey to the Triangle, however, you have here the opportunity to hone your bargaining skills in a fashion known no where else. Have fun.

No sign of a dining room on board. Here, in Chiang Saen, no gift shops, though I am sure that this will change in a few years. Head to the Triangle, there oodles of gift shops there.
