Although this historic feature of Charlotte Amalie is known as the 99 steps, there are actually 103 steps leading up to Government Hill. They were were built in the mid 1700s by Danish settlers who realized that by using outdoor stairways they could more easily navigate the steep hills of Charlotte Amalie. The bricks used in the construction of the steps are ballast stones brought from Denmark that were used to stabilize Danish sailing ships.
There are many sets of outdoor stairways in Charlotte Amalie but the 99 steps are the most famous. They begin about halfway up the slope from the harbor at the historic 1829 Hotel, which features an amber waterfall and amber museum, and end near the Three Queens fountain at the foot of Blackbeard's Castle.
