Culpeper National Cemetery was created in 1867 to gather the roughly 2,000 scattered Union dead from various small cemeteries located around field hospitals and battlefields. The old section was closed to new burials in 1972. In 1975 more land was obtained, thus the cemetery reopened for new burials. While similar in appearance to Arlington, it is vastly smaller.
