The Brockville to Ottawa Railroad came to Almonte in 1859 and promptly went bankrupt. More money was obtained in 1864, and it was pushed onwards to Sandpoint near Arnprior. The main freight for many years was wood from the vast forests in the upper Ottawa valley. The railroad also became the catalyst for the phenomenal growth of the woolen industry in Almonte.
From a plaque on the Riverwalk trail next to the railroad bridge.
When the Brockville and Ottawa railway extended its tracks from Almonte to Arnprior in the early 1860's, they had to build a bridge over Shipman's water intake. It remains the same today.

This railway line has run through Almonte - across the river and on to North Bay Ontario - since 1860. At one time it was part of Canadian Pacific's Trans Canada rail network. Since CP decided to stop using it for freight service a couple of years ago it's been mostly idle.
