The Thai village of Sop Ruak is best known for its location. At the junction of three countries: Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos—known as "The Golden Triangle". This region has an infamous reputation as a producer of illegal opium, but this is no longer the case, certainly not here. This Triangle is a now a tourist destination, where both foreign and local visitors can gaze across the Mekong River, have their photo taken next to the Big Buddha, and visit this temple with this set of bells, as well as many other things.

Wat Prathat Pukhao lies directly behind and above the 'official' lookout point for the Golden Triangle. The bells are located at the entrance to the temple ordination hall, immediately visible as you enter the grounds. As with most Buddhist wats ringing the bell is an expected part of the visit, though a small donation of 20 baht is the done thing to do.

For those who are contemplating visiting the Triangle, be advised that there is a better view of this spot to be had from the temple grounds, further up the hill from these bells.
