George IV (12 August 1762 – 26 June 1830) was King for only 10 years and was Prince Regent for the 9 years prior to ascending to the throne. He served as Prince Regent in his father's final years as he succumbed to mental illness.
George IV was a troubled man, having a poor relationship with his father and his wife, Caroline. He forbade Caroline to come to his coronation and attempted to divorce her on the grounds of adultery by the introduction of an unpopular bill to Parliament. The bill was passed so narrowly and with such public disquiet that it was withdrawn before being passed into law.
Although regarded as 'The First Gentleman of England' he was unpopular with the people, in part because of the amount of money he spent on the Napoleonic War. His governmental ministers were said to find his behaviour selfish, unreliable, and irresponsible.
