Der erste sakrale Bau auf dem »Mühlegg« war die Kreuzkapelle, auch »Kalvare« genannt und wurde von den Rietzer Eheleuten Mathias Stöckl und Christina Gabl 1661 errichtet. Peter Graßmayr, Hofkammerbote des Landesfürsten in Innsbruck und ebenfalls geborener Rietzer, erbaute 1676 unterhalb genannter Kreuzkapelle eine kleine Kirche, die von der Bevölkerung als Ort christlicher Besinnung gerne angenommen wurde. 25 »Werchschuech« lang und 18 »Werchschuech« breit war dieses Kirchlein, das am 8. November 1678 der Bischof von Brixen, Paulinus Mayr im Beisein vieler Gläubiger weihte.

Schon bald aber war diese erste Kirche zu klein, sodass man bereits sechs Jahre später, also 1684, das Gotteshaus vergrößerte und nach vierjähriger Bauzeit, Fürst Bischof Franz Josef Khuen, die Kirche an die Bevölkerung übergeben konnte.

1756 war es Baumeister Johann Umhauser, der die Kirche barockisierte und auf die nunmehrige Größe erweiterte.

Das wohl traurigste Ereignis in der Geschichte des Wallfahrtsortes war der Brand vom 15. August 1947, damals wurden die Holzkonstruktionen des Turmes sowie die des Dachstuhls völlig zerstört. Dieser Brand kam in Rietz einer Katastrophe gleich und löste ungläubiges Entsetzen innerhalb der Bevölkerung aus.
