Museum Laufental is located in a former school at Heyleplatz in the northwest of the medieval center of Laufen.
The beginning of the museum is dated back to WWII. Due to a number of bombs that hit Switzerland by mistake, the authorities of Laufen ordered the residents to get rid of burnable goods stored in their attics. Three local citizens - Leo Segginger, Werner Fuchs and Leo Schumacher - found a lot of objects in the resulting trash heaps they considered important local heritage that should be conserved for future generations. They stored the goods in a barn and founded a museum association. After 1945 they could use some spare rooms in the town hall for exhibitions. During the decades the rooms became too small until finally in 1977 a new location was found in a historic former school from 1828 near the northern town gate.
Today the museum hosts special exhibitions that change each year - traditionally on November 11th - and a number of permanent collections:
- Fossils
- Neolithic and Mesolithic Relics
- findings from an Ancient Roman villa
- a collection of Nativity scenes
- Helias Helye - Switzerland's first book printer

- historic firearm production
- history of local craft, trade and agriculture
