The Royal Botanical Gardens was established in Hamilton in the late 1920s. The gardens have featured many designers over the years including J. Austin Floyd and Carl Borgstrom. The garden has a greenhouse, abortoreum and large marsh area including Cootes Paradise. The Katie Osborne Lilac Garden is the largest lilac collection in the world.

The gardens were designated a historic site in 1993 and the plaque was placed in 1998. The plaque is near the front of the interpretive center and should be free to view.
