Ring Mountain preserve, a local treasure
Ramble these hills for natural pleasure
Clear days with views -- few can complete
Foggy, drips atmosphere, imagination's replete
Here find a bench to rest you a while
And remember the botanist who documented these miles.
John Thomas Howell (1903-1994) was a botanist and author of "Marin Flora" -- which remains the "only comprehensive identification guide to the county’s native and naturalized plants" (http://cnps.org/store.php?crn=52&rn=382&action=show_detail)
He became a curator at the California Academy of Sciences in the late 1920s and has a chair named for him at that institution. He was a protege and frequent traveling companion of the famous Alice Eastwood. If you have walked the trails of Ring Mountain, you may already be familiar with the plaque memorializing Howell's 80th birthday. Come, have a sit, enjoy the views, and share Howell's love of Marin County's natural diversity.
