Mittagong's early history saw the establishment of the first blast furnace in Australia to process iron ore quarried in the district. The supports for the roof of the church were smelted at the blast furnace.

The Church was built on land donated by the Fitzroy Iron Company. The Chairman of the company, E. Vickery, laid the foundation stone in May 1865. The iron works made the trowel that was used and the church, which was also a school, was opened in February 1866.
