The Golden Pagoda is the largest and most respected pagoda in the city of Myawaddy in eastern Myanmar. Standing guard at the southern entrance to the Pagoda are two large lions. I did some research, and these creatures are definitely lions, not dragons. These lions are larger than life-sized (at least I hope so), I estimate 3m high. The Pagoda has been extensively refurbished over the past decade. Everything looks new.
The task of these two creatures is to guard the Buddha and the Pagoda. As I was told there is 386kgs of gold on the golden stupa at the centre of the Pagoda, they have a job to do.
