The foundation stone is on the western side of the church adjacent to a side entrance.

The church is built of hand hewn sandstone. Mittagong or New Sheffield as it was known during colonial times had two major building booms, one in the 1880 the other in the 1920s. It was in the latter that St Stephens was built.

The entrance to the church is now via a modern addition on the northern side.
Year of construction: 1928
