HISTOIRE

Fondée à Montréal en 1869 par un groupe de citoyens très en vue, la Société Canadienne pour la Prévention de la Cruauté envers les Animaux fut la première société humanitaire au Canada. Nous ignorons qui a favorisé sa formation mais l’histoire reconnaît l’appui de sociétés à Paris, en Angleterre et aux Etats-Unis.

Bien qu’elle détienne une charte provinciale québécoise, l’objectif premier de la Société était de : «Prévenir efficacement la cruauté envers les animaux à travers le Canada». Malgré que notre unique succursale soit à Montréal, la société comptait un représentant en Ontario avant qu’une société de protection animale distincte soit fondée dans cette province.

Le premier souci de la SPCA Canadienne a été d’améliorer le traitement des chevaux de labeur. La surcharge, la famine, les plaies dues aux harnais et les blessures infligées à ces chevaux représentaient les cas de cruauté les plus communs. Au cours de sa première année de fondation, la SPCA Canadienne a accompli des progrès remarquables en ce qui concerne leur condition. Ce n’était qu’un début, car peu de temps après la Société s’occupait également du contrôle humanitaire des chiens, des combats de coqs et de l’abattage des oiseaux sauvages.

En 1914, la SPCA Canadienne acquiert son premier refuge au 201 de la rue Demontigny Est. En 1928, le refuge souffre de surpopulation et déménage alors sur la rue St-James Ouest (aujourd’hui St-Jacques O.). Le personnel comprenait six inspecteurs, un chauffeur, un responsable de l’euthanasie, un gardien de nuit et trois employés de bureau.

La SPCA Canadienne a poursuivi ses opérations sur la rue St-James jusqu’à ce qu’elle trouve, en 1953, un nouveau terrain sur la rue Namur (aujourd’hui Jean-Talon). Le nouvel édifice fut terminé en 1955 et habité jusqu’en 1985, puis démoli et reconstruit afin de rencontrer des normes de qualité plus élevées pour les abris et les soins animaliers.

La SPCA Canadienne a évolué depuis ses débuts en 1869. Elle a évolué avec le mouvement humanitaire pour défendre les animaux là où il y a ignorance, cruauté, exploitation ou négligence.

C’est une observation singulière le fait qu’en occident la législation sur la prévention de la cruauté envers les animaux a précédé celle qui concerne la protection des enfants. En Angleterre, il y a 100 ans, des enfants âgés de 8 et 9 ans travaillaient dans les mines de charbon beaucoup plus d’heures que les mules qui étaient alors protégées par la loi. En 1884, John Colam, secrétaire de la R.S.P.C.A. a participé à la fondation de la Société Nationale pour la Prévention de la Cruauté envers les enfants.

Our role is to prevent cruelty to animals through a number of actions that benefit animals and humans. We help prevent animal cruelty by:

receiving nearly 14,000 abandoned animals each year;
educating the public about the benefits of sterilisation;
advising people when adopting animals;
preventing impulsive adoption;
responding to animal cruelty cases.


A History of Compassion

The Canadian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CSPCA) was the first humane society in Canada, founded in Montreal in 1869 by a group of prominent citizens. It is not known under whose influence the society was formed, but its history acknowledges assistance from societies in Paris, England, and the United States.

Although it was formed under a provincial charter of Quebec, the initial stated object of the Society was “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the Dominion of Canada”. Though we had only one branch in Montréal, the Society did have an agent in Ontario before a separate humane society was formed in that province.

During the early years, the primary concern of the CSPCA was improving the treatment of work horses. Beatings, overloading, starvation, lameness, and harness sores were common cruelties inflicted upon work horses in those days. Within its first year, the CSPCA made significant headway in improving conditions for horses throughout Montreal. This was only the beginning, and it was not long before the CSPCA focused its attention on other issues such as humane dog control, cock-fighting, and the killing of wild birds.

In 1914, the Society acquired its first shelter at 201 Demontigny St. E. By 1928, the Demontigny St. Shelter had become very crowded and the Society moved to new headquarters on St. James St. W (now St. Jacques). The Shelter staff consisted of six inspectors, a driver, a person in charge of euthanasia, and a night watchman and three administrative employees.

The CSPCA continued to operate out of its St. James St. headquarters until 1953, when the Society found a property on Namur St. (now Jean Talon) and began to build a new shelter. The new building was completed in 1955 and served until 1985, when it was demolished and rebuilt to meet the increased demands for better animal housing and care.

The CSPCA has come a long way since its beginnings in 1869. Our Society has grown with the rest of the humane movement – speaking on behalf of animals wherever there is ignorance, cruelty, exploitation, or neglect.

It is a telling comment on the western world that legislation for the prevention of cruelty to animals predated protection of children in most areas. A century ago in England, eight- and nine-year-old children were forced to work longer hours in the coal mines than the pit mules, which were protected by law. In 1884, John Colam, Secretary of the RSPCA, helped to form the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
