A flag displayed at the
Germanna Foundation Visitor Center in Locust Grove, Virginia is emblazoned with a symbol of the Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies in Virginia. The symbol is represented by a picture of the visitor center & library within a pentagon with the years 1714 - 1717 superimposed at the bottom.
The foundation is dedicated to preserving the history of the first Germanna colonies on the Rapidan River in Orange County. The first colony of German settlers was established by Lt. Gov. Alexander Spotswood in 1714 and a second colony was established in 1717. The pentagon represents the shape of the fort, known as Fort Germanna, that Spotswood built for the protection of the colonies against native Indian attacks.
The flag flies alongside the American flag and Virginia state flag on the edge of the parking area to the visitor center.
