The Confederate soldier statue is located in Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, IN. It is a very rare sight to see a Confederate memorial in a northern state.
This cemetery has 24 graves of confederate soldiers buried here of soldiers that died in local prison camps during the Civil War. This monument is a marker that names all of these interments.
The inscription on the front of the monument reads:
"THIS TABLET WAS PLACED ON THIS MONUMENT BY THE UNITED STATES TO MARK THE BURIAL PLACE OF/24 CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS, WHO, WHILE PRISONERS OF WAR, DIED AT EVANSVILLE AND/WERE BURIED IN THIS CEMETERY, WHERE THE INDIVIDUAL GRAVES CANNOT BE IDENTIFIED NOW./"
