The coastal area of the 'new' City of Melaka is the tourist oriented part of the city. This is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of the construction here dates to the early 20th century, and, then and now, are small buildings with a family business below and accommodation above. An exception to this is this colourful building. It is dated to 1911, and has what looks to be original Chinese lettering on its facade, however, there is no sign of its original intent. Most likely though a professional centre, filled with busy lawyers and accountants. Now selling chicken—so it goes.
I visited at night, during the Chinese New Year celebrations. The streets were filled with happy families, busy teenagers and lots of street vendors, while all listened to bands and music, watched cultural re-enactments, and generally relaxed and enjoyed themselves as a brief respite from the cares of the world.
Year of construction: 1911
