Antonio Abreu Coat of arms is composed by five wings on a red background.
The coat of arms is placed in a magestic fountain in Belem (Fonte Luminosa)in front of Jerónimos Monastery together with 49 other coat of arms of important personalities from the time of Portuguese Discoveries. The fountain was designed by Cottinelli Telmo and built in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition. There´s very little information about the fountain and the Coat of Arms and most available information refers to a total of 32 Coat of arms of Portuguese inland and Overseas provinces wich is wrong. These coat of arms can be seen in the gardens around the fountain designed with flowers and bushes.
António de Abreu was a Portuguese explorer and naval officer born in Madeira. He participated, under the orders of Afonso de Albuquerque in the conquest of Hormuz in 1507 and Malacca in 1511, this year being sent to the command of the first European expedition to reach the Moluccas, Timor and the Banda Islands (Bante) in 1512.
On July 25, 1511, in the conquest of Malacca, Antonio de Abreu led a Chinese junk that up the river at high tide to Malacca. The Portuguese contingent arrived in the city allowing the conquest in August. Severely wounded in the face, having lost some teeth and aprt of the tongue he rejected the proposal from Albuquerque to leave the command. In November, before leaving Malacca, Albuquerque gave him the leadership of a fleet of three ships that sailed in search of the "Spice Islands", led by Francisco Serrao and Afonso Bisagudo. Malaysian pilots were recruited to guide them through Java, the small Islands of Sunda and Amboina to Banda, where they arrived in early 1512. They remained there for about a month, buying and filling their ships with nutmeg and clove. António de Abreu then went sailing on Amboina while his deputy commander stepped forward to the Moluccas but sank ending in Ternate.
He was promoted to major still during the life of Prince Henry and there´s an hypothesis that Antonio Abreu may have discovered Australia, one hundred years before the arrival of the Dutch. His service in the Indies would be honored with the appointment of Captain-General of Malacca in 1526.
