Viseu Coat of Arms is composed by a shield with a Castle, a man blowing a horn and a tree.
According to the legend, King Ramiro II, King of Asturias made a trip from Viseu where he lived to the land of the Moors where he fell in love and kidnapped Zahara, the sister of the Moor King Alboazar.
Alboazar in revenge decided to kidnap Ramiro´s wife,Urraca from Viseu Castle and take her to his castle in Gaia (near Porto). Ramiro has to avenge this outrage so he chooses his most valiant soldiers and rides to Gaia where he enters the castle disguised as a pilgrimn leaving his soldiers in a nearby wood. Ramiro is caught by the Moor King and before his execution he ask for a last wish. He want´s to blow is horn for the last time. This is a sign to his troops that invade the castle and save him.
The castle in the Coat of Arms is the Gaia Castle invaded and burned by Ramiro, the river is the Douro river, the mand blowing the horn is Ramiro himself and the tree is the wood where his soldiers were hidden.

Today´s Coat of Arms is slightly diferent. The castle is in the middle of the shield but the mand and the tree are each one in one of the side towers and the river was abandoned.

This particular coat of arms is composed only by the shield. t´s the monarchy Coat of arms of Braga. It´s part of the Monument to the Battle of Ourique when the forces of Portuguese Prince Afonso Henriques (of the House of Burgundy) defeat the Almoravid Moors led by Ali ibn Yusuf. The Coat of arms is placed on the floor. Tere are 2 coat of arms in each of the 4 corners of the monument (See pictures).
