The flag is a blue field with the University of Rochester Crest (or coat of arms) overlaid. The crest is a gold orle on a field of blue; an open book (left) and a lyre (right) over the Staff of Asclepius (single serpent wound around a staff) with the latin motto "Meliora" displayed on a gold banner dividing the upper two symbols from the lower. In chief, the date 1850.

The date is date the University of Rochester was formed. The open book is the symbol for the University of Rochester; the lyre is the symbol for the Eastman School of Music; the Staff of Asclepius is the symbol for the UofR Medical School. The motto "Meliora" means "to make better".

The River Campus. From the main entrance at Elmwood and Wilson Boulevard, proceed north to Interfaith Chapel. Directly across the street, you will find "The Quad" with the dome of Rush Rees Library at the east end. At "The Quad" you will find two flagpoles. The US flag flies from the northern flagpole (left as you are looking at the library dome) and the UofR flag flies from the southern flagpole.
