Chiang Mai has a large inter-provincial station ~4kms northeast of the city, however, it also has a smaller, local, station closer in, to the north of the city centre. This station deals with destinations within the province, the small and not so small towns, and the farming villages, lying within the large province of Chiang Mai. Also, I noticed one bus route to the nearby (30kms) small provincial capital of Lamphun.
In design, the station reflects its larger brother. There is a long, rectangular building, covered with three distinctive, round, 'hats' (in appearance at least). These are bus parking areas. The building contains the bulk of the station: ticket counters, small shops, chairs and people. Surrounding all of this are lots of tuk tuks. I have seen smaller and far less busy provincial bus stations, in far smaller provincial capitals and provinces.
